Initiative to Permanently Overcome Drought in Konkan (2012–13)

In the year 2012–13, to permanently overcome the drought situation, the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan initiative was implemented in five districts of the Konkan region. A comprehensive action plan was prepared to conserve water and improve groundwater levels through coordinated efforts among various departments.

Under this campaign, the Rural Water Supply Department undertook activities such as strengthening existing water sources and establishing rainwater harvesting systems through bore wells, among others.

    Objectives of the Campaign:

    1. To retain maximum rainfall within the village boundary (shivar).

    2. To increase the groundwater level.

    3. To expand the irrigated area in the state, provide protected water for agriculture, and improve water-use efficiency.

    4. To ensure sustainable water availability for all in the state by reviving defunct rural water supply schemes and increasing supply.

    5. To implement the Groundwater Act.

    6. To remove silt from existing water bodies through public participation, thereby increasing water storage capacity.

    Goals of the Scheme:

    • To benefit tribal farmers with irrigation water from dams.

    • To recharge percolation wells and provide drinking water for livestock and wildlife.

    • To indirectly increase irrigation potential.

    • To desilt water sources, strengthen water resources, recharge wells, and optimize the use of available water through water conservation efforts.
